Bretton Hostel Facilities

Sitting/dining room:

A cosy sitting room, with wood burning stove, doubles up as a dining room with tables, benches and chairs to sit 17.  French doors open on to the south facing patio - a real sun trap, and a wide picture window looks north, with views over to Stanage Edge and beyond.  A high chair is available, plus books and a games chest.

Self catering kitchen:

This is a good sized kitchen with plenty of work surfaces and storage space for supplies. There is a dual fuel range cooker with 7 LPG gas hob burners, two electric ovens and a grill, plus a separate 4 LPG gas burner hob, a microwave, two kettles, two toasters, a large fridge, small freezer, full range of crockery, pans and utensils which means there is plenty of opportunity to rustle up a meal.

Garden area

At the front of the hostel is a predominately stone paved south facing patio with tables and benches, a real sun-trap.  There are grassy areas for additional sitting to the front and rear of the hostel and next to the new eco-building.  Between May and August the hay meadow is host to a wide variety of wild flowers, grasses, butterflies, insects and ground nesting birds.  During these months visitors are asked to refrain from using the meadow area for outdoor activities.

Washrooms

The washrooms are all on the ground floor in a single storey area, with 2 recently refurbished electric shower rooms , 3 toilets, 3 washbasins and a drying room for wet gear and boots.

Heating and hot water

The hostel is off gas grid and relies on electricity for heating and water, with LPG gas cylinders for cooking on the hobs.  It is heated by state of the art infra red heating, panels, which heat the fabric of the building and its occupants, rather than the air, as with traditional convection heaters.  There is a wood burning stove in the sitting room and studio.  Hot water is heated by electric immersion heater at night during Economy 7 low rate hours.  PV Solar panels have been installed on the hostel roof and the electricity that is generated goes to top up the hot water during the day and to supply additional electrical items that are in use.  Any excess electricity is fed back to the grid.

Parking and cycle storage facilities

There is a parking area for approximately 6 cars close to the hostel and a secure cycle storage room.

Free WiFi.  Reasonable mobile reception from most providers is available throughout the hostel, although it may vary between indoors and outside. No TV.
